Spanish: Shining Together: Researching a Diverse and Active LA

Spanish: ShineLA is led by a multidisciplinary team of scientists and key stakeholders across multiple sectors including health, sports, arts & design, and representative members from the community. Together, the ShineLA research team is conducting what will be one of the largest population-based studies of physical activity in the world, with an estimated 150,000 participants. Findings from the ShineLA research study will provide invaluable data on physical activity, health disparities, and social and environmental influences on activity levels and mental health. ShineLA will give LA communities a voice to engage in their own health and well-being, allowing them to move, play, and work together to build a safer, healthier, happier, and more active community!

Spanish: Let’s get ready for the 2028 Games!

Spanish: ShineLA incorporates innovative, evidence-based strategies to increase and sustain physical activity among LA’s diverse communities in the lead up to the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games – and beyond.

Physical inactivity is associated with negative health outcomes including cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, cancer, and increased levels of anxiety and depression. Physical inactivity remains one of the leading global risk factors for mortality.

Participation in exercise, sports, and active play can decrease the risks of these negative outcomes and lead to stronger muscles and bones, healthier weight, improved sleep, better mood.

More than 64% of adults and 80% of youth and adolescents are insufficiently active. Physical activity levels drop even further among underserved and minority populations.

Spanish: In the US, more than 80% of youth and adolescents are insufficiently active.
